Working with Forest of Hearts to create an edible Garden of Wellbeing at Stratford Hospital

We are very proud to be working with the Forest of Hearts charity and a range of local businesses such as BAM Construction, Orbit, The Box Factory, Bellagio Stone and Event Cow to create an edible Garden of Wellbeing at Stratford Upon Avon Hospital that will deliver health benefits to over 85,000 patients, staff and community visitors each year.

The garden will comprise of 25 raised beds located outside the new cancer and eye treatment units, which are predicted to become a world class centre of excellence for cancer care and the treatment of eye conditions in the UK.

Providing both a tranquil and educational space for staff, patients and visitors, the garden will supply fresh food to Café Lomas, the new health and wellbeing hub within the hospital. It will also provide an outdoor working space for people suffering from isolation, loneliness and depression.

We are delighted that David Bradley, the Garden of Wellbeing's Parton will be there to celebrate the opening of the garden on September 25th along with 25 teams from local businesses who will come together to launch this new initiative.

Designed to celebrate and create awareness of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals, each raised bed will illustrate the importance of businesses working together to create a better world. The focus will be on supporting people's physical and mental health through gardening, healthy eating and increasing biodiversity.

The garden will be the first of it's kind and will draw a lot of attention, potentially becoming a template for other hospitals across the UK.

Recognised health benefits

The benefits of horticulture on health have long been recognised and the Garden of Wellbeing will have a significant effect on patients suffering from serious illnesses.

“We know that when people move into nature, chronic inflammation goes down. Serious illnesses such as heart disease, dementia, diabetes and depression are all caused by chronic inflammation.” Dr William Bird MBE - Creator of the Garden Gyms.

The garden has received support from Monty “We know that gardening is good for you. It is fantastic all-round exercise. It inculcates high levels of well-being, that is undeniable and needs little measurement. We know that it is extremely effective in alleviating and preventing mental illness.” Monty Don
